97 F-350 srw axle questions

Had some teeth break off of my ring gear last night. After tearing everything apart the only thing I can salvage is the carrier its self. I been pricing the parts to rebuild ( ring and pinion, bearings, seals, also the limited slip friction disks ) Parts stores keep coming up with $1000+ or either total in parts or brand new carrier all put together.

The tag on my diff cover : 4L10 10 2 7L11
I understand that means that I have an 4:10's and it is a S10.25.

my question is, would it be cheaper to find a junk yard axle or craigslist axle or just rebuild my old one?. I have been finding them for anywhere from 150-400 dollars. Would it be worth my time and money to find a good used axle?. I just dont want to end up in the same boat im in right now..

Depends on your situation. I don't drive my Diesel trucks much (5-9k / year) and my time isnt worth anything, so I would go for a used one. If you do a lot of driving or pulling maybe look toward the new parts.

where are you located? i may have a spare axle if your close enough.

Thanks for the reply. I live in northern Indiana. I may have found a whole axle . Ill see what happens with it. Im gonna try my luck with a used one.

Used axles are cheap, and easy to throw in to get you back up and running, that would be my choice.

Tons of good used ones on the west coast..so many here that I just gave 2 away to the steel guy...

theres tons of them in indy between pic a part and pull a part salvage yards. i think a carrier with ring and pinion goes for around 40 bucks.

I just sold one for $200, only had 80k on it, looked brand new inside. So you should be able to find a good used one for way less than the parts for a rebuild.

I found one with 100,000 and it was a good price. Im crossing my fingers. Had to drive to Indy to pick it up last night. Hope its a good one..thanks guys
