Hey guys. My 02 has a BTS 4r in it. I haven't changed the fluid and not 100% sure on the history. Have heard the horror stories of trans services with short time till a dead trans. Will it hurt to change the fluid?

Has a drain plug in the pan. Should I change the filter too? What fluid would you recommend and how many quarts?

Thanks guys.

When Marty recently re/plumbed my cooler lines to remove the hard piping and used push-lok , we changed filter added 2 qt. Shaffers and replaced filter.
Doubt that answers your questions but
It's bumped up for ya.

What color is the fluid? Good or look used?

You can always call Brian and see if he has any record of the trans. He might have
the truck milage and the date it was installed.

It would be pretty hard to kill a BTS unless you really mess something up...

Best procedure
- have 20qts of new fluid and a few 5 gal buckets
- remove line from trans to cooler at the cooler , put hose in bucket
- drain trans (only get about 4 qts)
- replace filter
- add back new what was drained
- (a) (this is easier with two people) start truck and wait for bubbles to show in fluid stream
- turn truck off
- add new what was pumped out
- did the last fluid being pumped out look like new fluid?
false - go back up to (a)
else continue
- reconnect lines
- drive truck around a few miles and recheck fluid
- recycle used fluid

If you have the money spent for a BTS I would also run a offline filter.
Like the one from dieselsite. Just my opinion.
I'm running one along with a 6.0 cooler.
Not necessary but hell it's a BTS. Why not protect your investment.
And I believe fluid changes are supposed to be at 30k mi intervals.
If you're hauling all the time I possibly would do it sooner.
I changed the fluid in my stocker after 219k mi when I bought it.
Full flush. No issues for the rest of its life before the BTS transformation.

BTS strongly discourages against the use of an external filter.

Drop the pan, change the filter, install the pan and refill it...simple, and ur good to go.

do it once a year.

You get maybe 20% of the fluid changed, and the filter doesnt need
to be changed that often. That is about like draining a quart from the
motor and changing the filter every 2000 miles and calling it good to go.

What is in the transmission pan is just a small part of the total fluid.

trans holds 22 quarts.....I typically have to re-fill with 7-8 quarts with a standard 4x4 pan, and
9 or so with the PML pan I'm running now......

that's about 40% of the fluid, and good enough for me. I've been running a BTS for three years, doing nothing BUT towing
our 5er, (21,000 lbs gross weight), out here on the West Coast in the Mountains, and NO problems.....

suit yourself.....

Never hurts to call Brian and ask him. He's great to deal with and will answer any questions you have. Saw it mentioned above about an external filter, I was going to put one in and Brian said not to. I took his advice.

What is his (Brian of BTS) reasoning for not putting an external filter on?

I don't remember why. He must have had a good reason, transmissions are kind of his thing. If I had to guess I would say it might be a restriction to the cooler.

If I remember correctly, Brian said there is no benefit and they all add restriction which is a big no no.

I believe it was Brian but it may have been one of his dealers that said it would be better to run without the internal filter than to add an external filter.

The Diesel Site one is a bypass filtration set up that should only filter ~10% of the fluid at a time. I'm gonna have to call Brian and ask myself because I have one of these ready to go on the truck and would like to hear his opinion on this.

No disrespect and not saying you're wrong, but want it straight from the source.
