Is Rotella really bad on a 7.3?

That is pretty crazy to hear good things about Royal Purple. It seems like everyone hates the stuff because it sheers so quickly. I guess for the price of the stuff it should at least be decent though right?

I really have no way of confirming that that was the oil being used, but he put it on his core sheet with his injectors so I have no reason to believe otherwise! I run Schaeffers fluid in my TDI.

I ran Rotella for a long time but always noticed when i drained it at 3-4k miles it was like water.. switched to mobil delvac and as soon as i started the truck i was sold.. the truck was way way quieter. ran smoother and at 4k miles was still somewhat like oil and not water.. tried delo as well. back to delvac.

ill be switching to synthetic soon (35k on new engine). going to try valvoline extreme blue

When I bought my truck the guy said that they only ran valvoline PBE. The first te I changed the oil I used rotella (times were tight) and it did not like it at all. It didn't like to start, and I kept having problems sticktion issues. So I changed oil again with rotella thinking fresh oil would help.... Same thing so I changed back to valvoline and my problems went away.

I run Schaeffer's in everything I own. There is some great reading about Schaeffers on the bobistheoilguy site. It has worked great for me and I have done multiple oil samples doing 10k mile oil changes and it is still good to go.

My truck has had Delo 400 since about 5000 miles. It has been great for me and everyone I know. I haven't tried anything else and I don't want to piss the truck off changing to a different kind or anything LOL

This makes me wonder what was run in my truck before i got it, the injectors were shot at 176k miles to the point that the truck would not start... I run delvac now and the truck seems to like it but i plan on switching to Amsoil on the next oil change.

I bought my pu with 75,000 on the clock, and since it has had Delo 400. at 240,000 now have not had any issues (knock on wood). But, i have noticed around 4000-5000 miles it does lose some pep. Not sure if its the oil, hpop, injectors or something else though.

My truck has 240,000 miles on original injectors. Maybe before you got the truck the guy rarely changed his oil or fuel filter...

Your truck is like a mirror image of mine then LOL

I do agree though... At around 4500 miles it seems to run differently.

These kind of threads get confusing. One will tell you to one direction with the oil an the next will lead you in another way. IMO try some different oils and send some samples off to see how your truck likes it.

:whs:

I've got a sample of 15W-40 Rotella with 2,600 miles on it from my last oil change. I'll send it in for analysis. I'll vary it from there (say, 1,500 to 2,000 miles, then maybe 3 or 4,000 mile intervals) to see if anything changes.

I don't plan on switching oils, so maybe someone else can do the same with a different oil...

My truck has had Rotella in it since it was new. I am the third owner. I ran it for the first 30K or so that I had it. Valvoline was on sale at O'Reillys once when I went in. Bought some. My truck liked it. On Rotella, if I went over 4K on it, I would start losing performance and it would start using it.

My last oil change, I just flat ass forgot. Couple weeks ago, we had a cold spell (25º). Started the truck, got about a half block down the road and it just fell on it's face and died, ICP was at zero. Let it set for a few minutes, fired up and ran. Went down to the parts house and got oil and a filter. I write the date and mileage on the oil filter when I change it. I had gone a couple hundred miles short of 10K on that oil change, drained out 12 quarts (I only put 14 in on a change). Oil was thick. If it had been summer or if I had been patient and let it warm up in the drive, it would have been fine. I am setting right at 311K on my truck now.

My conclusion: Rotella will not hurt your truck, but I am running Valvoline. Wish I could afford Sheaffers I would run it.
