I see more and more people are deciding to run a 4r swap instead of keeping a 5r or doing a full race trans like a lenco.

I gotta ask why?

Corsilli went 7.1 and shifted fine now that he's found a converter that works for him.

Aaron made several 10 sec passes with some minor issues

So I gotta ask why swap to a 4r unless you plan on running 9s? Aren't most 5r failures converters anyway?

I just can't see giving up the trans selector cruise control or a wrench on the dash unless its a full competition truck

Do we need to ask more from our tuners to make these 5r live?

Keep it on topic as im not trying to start a fight im just curious as I see craig and mike both having good luck at similar speeds.

I plan on trying to make the 5r work if I run into problems after the next I plan on making. If anything might try Elites new modified solenoids and custom trans tuning before trying a 4r. At least it is there if you have to have one.

I thought it was because the 4r is cheaper to build, and it doesn't use solenoids to shift like the 5r, so it shifts when its suppose to.

People were having problems with the 5r lasting, and the 4r can use a stand alone controller to command the shifts more reliably. Be interesting to see what the live trans tuning can do.

Cost was the deciding factor for me. I don't plan to race my truck but the 5r in our chassis have not been liking life. I honestly don't know why the tuning can't happen. Maybe if the 5r trans options in regards to parts and tuning come around I'll switch back but spending $8000 on a trans that "might" work is not cool. Just my 2 cents.

So at what HP range do these 5r start failing? Just wondering.

I went 4r because I'd rather not gamble with 8000 bux...it's held in the big 7.3s for years and Craig beats the dog piss outta his and it's holding...if its a give and take between constantly breaking or dealing with a few lights it's no question in my mind

Plus the 4r is cheaper

Can't y'all run a manual PCM/ECM and retain cruise, and ditch the CEL?

And the dash that displays the gears is an overlay on older SD's, couldn't that be swapped to?

For the guys running one on a street truck at least.

I believe the 5rs will be fine with the right high performance converter. What i want to know is what is the best converter for these trannys? Obviously the standard suncoast, and HD converters are out of the question.

so is it a question of them goin to the 4r for the trans, or the tc?

i like to sit and do quiet reading at night, and alot of what i read, is not so much the failure of the trans, but the tc goin and taking the trans with it.

look at all the trouble craig had with tc's. maybe it was mike, sorry, i dont remember.

i know nothing about this next statement, but humor me. can you not make a 4r tc work in the 5r? ya i know, mounting this, holes that, but can the guts of the 4r convertor be put inside the 5r one?

just a thought.

I would LOVE to put a lenco in the ranger but like you said the R&D would me crazy and the dang thing is expensive its self.

Thia is basically my whole point mike found a converter that works so what's the point of the 4r

So I hears cost of the 4r is cheaper

What's the trans and pcs cost?
What about the cost of the input for the transfercase?

What's gunna be cost in this box to retain cruise Ect?

I hope Aaron is considering it or someone else who can help absorb the cost to make it happen.

I would be all over it if it was available

As i would love to run another TC and call it a day, it seems that with the singles the 4R never fails or slips at all. I do plan on 9's with fuel and that is the only reason why i want one. After seeing the 4R in person it shifts flawlessly. But then again someone does need to step up to the plate that can afford a little R&D, until then 4R has my vote
