Trying to decide on what weight to run. Going to try it but worried about the 15/40 in the winter

Gotcha was just curious. I want to run 15/40 but winter temps are not a good combo with it

Every in use analysis I've done shows 15-40 is 1.5 to 2 cst higher viscosity at 100c. That's not just LE, that's everyone's oil. It's just what it is. So at operating temp 15-40 will hold ICP just a bit better. In the 6.0 it also helps hold the fuel dilution down from the injectors.

Lots of good info. I'm sure it's great oil and had lots of benefits but it's nice to able to pickup oil when I need it and run one viscosity year round. Not saying you can't run your 15/40 year round but it's a spendy experiment for me.

It's experimental in your climate in the winter. Basically everywhere else it's just going to be data driven best practice. I'm never going to guess about ICP and film strength. That's what keeps things lubricated. And, it's what the engine was designed to run on. One caveat would be you can tune for the drop in viscosity. But that's an entirely different thread.

Not arguing your point but it's an expensive experiment especially when your stuck somewhere in the dead of winter with a vehicle that won't start. I just have never had good luck in cold weather with 15-40

Your truck wont start if you use 15-40?

I run the 8800 15w40 in my 7.3 year around. The winters here get low 20s to high teens regular. There for about 2 weeks it was close to zero, my 7.3 started just fine with just cycling the glow plugs. Never plugged it in so I wouldn't have any worries.

Where cjfarms is at it quite regularly gets to -20° and colder with consistent 20+ mph winds in the winter. Not uncommon to be colder for lengths of time.

Exactly. When it's single digits or below it doesn't like to start. With 5-40 it will no problem. One morning in Cooke city mt it was -34 with a 5-10 mph wind. It started with 5-40 but wasn't liking it. I know for sure it wouldn't have with 15-40

Our 5-40 is an amazing oil. So I'm not trying to talk you out of trying it. But I'm always up front about ICP. It's something no other oil person will talk a lot about. I dove into all this to gather as much data as I could. I'll guarantee that our 5-40 will hold ICP better than any other. And for cold starts our CCS is 5,690 cp at -30

MRV At -35°C is. 23,000 cp.
for reference Mobil 1 is 24,453 at -35C. To give you an idea of the difference, 1443 cP is about the weight of a 250 gear oil. That's the difference.
Our 15-40 has the same MRV score cP at -25C as Mobil 1 does at -35c. Mobil 1 doesn't list their CCS, but I'd be it would be getting close.
