I think 2" over the exhaust diameter is a good rule. 1" bigger just isn't enough of a difference to me, its like why even bother getting the tip. 2" is a good change in size without being too much.

Lol that size comparison can be said about all you guys with lifts and huge tires on your trucks that never go off road too. Its all about preference. I had a 4" dp, 5" back, and a 7" tip on my 7.3, and especially once I installed my d.I. headers, it sounded great to me, and everyone that ever heard it too. I liked it for the sound difference, I originally had 5" with no tip, and it just didnt sound quite right to me

Thank You! I have 35s and 5"mbrp exhaust. That 6" is plenty big and looks.balanced with the tires. People.are.giving me crap cuz i dont usually.care about cosmetics but jesus, those tips are way north of 100 bucks and a 5-7x18" long in black is too expensive to buy and not like. Im gonna get a 5-6"@18" long so there is no tailpipe showing and if.that doesnt satisfy ill run no tip since I sanded and painted my exhaust semi-gloss.black.

Guy down the street has a 5" sgraightpiped 6L and the timbre of the.exhaust note is nice. Wot is noisy and typically what people like.but they sound.nice with smooth 1/4-1/2 throttle acceleration.

Something you might want to keep in mind is that an 18" tip might be too long for your exhaust. I know on my diamond eye kit the last bend in the pipe isn't long enough to use an 18", it would be sticking out way past the fender. I ended up going with a 4-6x15"

My diamond eye is the same way. That's only a 13" tip on there but it looks great

Dont ya think as long as Ive.been looking this.crossed my mind?

Mbrp makes those tips.18" long for one reason, its about 18" from where the tailpipe turns around the rear leaf.spring pack to the exit point. If you shove the tip on and keep it slightly back it'll exit just beyond the bodyline.

Exhausts which exit perpendicular to the fender would require a shorter tip. Imo, they also.look like.a$$ which is.why I ran mine two years and yanked it off. Looked stupid.

Ive ran several exhausts and mbrp looks.the.best, imo. Flowmaster can look good.but they arent widely used and seem to vary in fit. Magnaflow is overpriced to me. I wish Bassani would make.exhaust for super duty as they ALWAYS make a kicka$$ product. I think flopro is.good.too. Not real impressed with diamond eye or silverline at any cost.

I cant tell in your pic but is your tail pipe separate from the over the axle pipe?
What I did was used a turn down off of the over the axle pipe. It puts the the turn down just behind the rear tire but inside the bed side. It is right under the leaf spring.
