Soooo, are there any 6.4's running a 4r with functional cruise, and no dash lights on? I ask because I have not dealt with any 4r swaps directly, and that would drive me crazy on a daily driver. No biggie on a race truck though

When the guy with 4 turbos was trying to get his truck tuned right, he ran a file that actually turned the lights off and cruise worked I think. It was really weird, and I don't think they know how it happened.

This shows that it can be done... We just need to find the loophole that allows this.

It really shouldn't be difficult, anyone with an ids could flash your pcm to a manual pcm flash. I would imagine every thing would work after that.

That's interesting. Ive force flashed a few trucks. Seemed to work fine. Just need the codes from a truck with similar options. There is another way to do it with the ids but it would take awhile.

May have been a fluke, mike. I know Craig tried it with his IDS with the help of his dealer and Eric and nobody could get it. Swapping to a manual PCM wouldn't take much it's just a hassle.

I was working on a 4r box for awhile that would remedy all that mess but I gave up once Tadd started making good ground with the 5r. The interest has never been high enough to justify going to production.

The ecms are the same no need to swap. It can all be done with the ids

The pin-out supports both manual and auto. You can program an auto pcm as a manual, but the harnesses are a bit different since some wires are not necessary with one that are necessary with the other. For example, the auto harness has a blank in the connector where the clutch position switch connects.

Personally I'm with Wayne. I've never liked the Idea of 4r swaps. Even in the drag trucks it's only worked with mild success. Rudy's truck has never ran faster that it did with a 5r. At the point that your breaking shafts in the 5r you'll still be breaking shafts in 4r's. They are very similar on input, intermediate, output shaft size and torque converters.

In a daily driver I really do not think it is worth it. I mean I don't see how anyone would like to get rid of cruise and look at cel all the time. Sure the 4r does work, but so does a 5r for 99% of all powerstroke owners. Like Dustin said, resale falls, operator convenience worsens and in all reality total power handling capacity is not any higher.

I just don't see going to a 4r unless gunning for the 9's in a race truck. And in that scenario I would really be looking at a full racing trans setup like a lenco. If your really serious about it.

I know I don't have a 6.4 but I have done the 4r swap into my 6.0 and I think the daily drive ability is better with a 4r than the 5r, yes I lost cruise control but that's all I lost. I never had a built 5r in my truck but i drove a built 5r with the same set up I run now and the 4r lights the turbo better and to me has better driver friendly qualities. Truck Source Diesel did mine and I couldn't be happier, and I know they have done this same conversion with 6.4's, 6.0's,5.9 cummins, and 6.7 cummins iirc and they only thing they haven't perfected yet is the cruise control. No CEL in the 6.4's or 6.0's. not looking to argue with anyone just my experience with it.

I greatly look forward to trying mine in my regular cab. Biggest reason for me to switch is cost and the awesome service of BTS.

Does bts offer the same warranty for both the 5r and the 4r ?
