iirc From what I understand if you plan on making over 550 he recommends a 4r conversion.
4r conversion folks, any regrets?

Brian is a pretty firm believer of the 4r. Before Craig did he Brian tried and tried to get a 4r100 in my black truck and one in Josh's blue/silver regular cab. Neither one of us had the time to play with it and devote to trial and error things. Josh even went so far as to have a pretty wild adaptor plate made to run things. I think the 4r serves its place, but guys like Mike Corsilli are perfect example that a 5r can live at high power. Mind you also, rudy and I have both been over 750 for quite a while in our crew cabs, and we both beat the ever living piss out of them on the street and hook them every week.
I havent had my 5r out since 2011 for even a refresh. 75+ hooks and 7500 miles.

Brian cold careless about the 5rs he focuses on the 4s.. And there's a reason the soonest you can get a build date isn't until 2014 sometime.

Erik's 5r has been through hell and back... He weighs in right at 9,000 lbs and with 37" tires, he puts that trans through its paces. In dpc '12, trap speed said he was putting down right at 1,000hp to the ground and it never skipped a beat.

Guys having good luck with the 5r. Are you going out on the street from like 20-30-40 mph rolls and putting it to the mat or are you just babying it until the time comes via drag racing, sled pulling. My stock trans last 8k miles tuned. My built trans has lasted at 600 to 800hp for 20k but my driving habits changed A LOT. If I'm not racing from a dig I don't usually get on it. I always remember these 5rs seemed like they could never find a gear. Anyone ever think of a stand alone on the 5rs?

This is really the only time I have issues with my 5r and these moments are what make me want to go to a 4r.... from a slow roll when I put it to the floor unless I use my lockup switch it likes to forget to grab the next gear or hunt for gears. Other than this and the occasional flare I see no issue with my built 5r. Unless there is a solution for this issue... anyone have insight on this?

For the guys that know me, they know I beat the piss out of my trans. Rolls, launches etc. my stock trans was still living (kinda) after 50k between 550 and 675 with 100+ track passes, sled pulling, etc.
I think tuning has a huge part to do with it along with maintenance. I went way overkill on fluids and stuff, and it seemed to work in my favor. With my built trans now, it hasn't ever missed a shift, or hunted for a gear at all. For me, gearheads stuff has worked really well.

For what its worth i had a BTS 5r in my 6.0, never had the problem with it hunting for gears. It was live tuned by Chris at TSD, and lived for probably 15k at 550-600hp, tuning was the best I ever ran. I drove the hell out of the truck, it was never babied.
Im thinking most of it is in the tuning, as my 6.4 with a stock trans has to hunt for gears right now when you matt it from a roll, yes i have custom tunes NO they are not live tunes. The live tuning plays a huge roll in the happiness of the trans from what i've experienced.
i have a 5r from Brian i will be putting in the 6.4, Brian had no objections to me running it over the 4r. All i was told was the 4r was still being developed as far as CEL and cruise went. In this case he told me to just run the 5r and not worry about it.

For what its worth, i did tell Brian i'm aiming for 700 with this truck. Possibly people searching for higher numbers need the controllability of a PCS.

Guys like said above, the tuning is WAY more important on a 5r. Good trans tuning will make or break any 5r no matter who built it.

I agree with tuning being very crucial, I ran the dog crap out of my stock 5r for damn near 2 years and it held up very well. Can't even remember how many times I ran it at the track with nitrous, multiple Dyno runs with nitrous, multiple burnouts, etc not including the daily driving hell I put it through. I opted for the 4r because it was an option and I wanted to try something different, towards the OP, I don't regret it one bit.

I agree with you guys although there are not many people who have the 4r...I loce mine but I do sometimes miss cruise...I like the shifts way better everything just seems crisper with the 4r...ive had a both a built 5r and now a built 4r...you see which one im with now
