As the title says i'm debating on swapping to a BTS 4r. I've talked to Brian about it, but still cant make up my mind. The truck will be a daily drivable toy that I drag down the strip or dirt track occasionally. No plans to tow heavy with it, but if somebody needs a tow I dont want to turn it down b/c of fears for my transmission.

So, anybody that has swapped to a built 4r have any regrets in going that route?

I think before the 5r's got to where they are today it was a no brainer swap for the guys pushing the envelope. Things the way they are now.... I don't see it being worth it. Resale plummets without a 5r trans too unless you sell to another enthusiast who is familiar with the mod.

Besides snapping shafts, I thought Craig had very good luck with the 4R... I remember him going through every converter available for the 5R, but I agree the 5R has seemed to do well over the past year or so. And I have no actual real world experience, but judging by the posts on here.. hunting for gears seems to be the 5Rs major downfall. How much does Haller's truck weigh anyway?

You are also comparing a stock trans to a built one

The complaint is the 5r cant shift fast enough, im saying even a stock one can. Speed is speed, the weight will play a roll on how long the shafts live

Are the 5rs finally shifting like they should?...at least back when I had a built 5r I wasnt a fan shift flares would hang gears etc...the 4r works fine for me honestly a huge improvement

Now if the 5r is evolving id be interested in seeing how they work if I ever build another 6.0/6.4

Weight is always going to play a huge role in trans life no matter what trans what vehicle...the less mass it has to work to move the less strain on the trans

I believe there have always been a few 5r's that shifted fine... Aaron went 9.49 on a 5r. Seems like there were a large percentage that had problems, but not all 5rs are created equal.

And as for Craig's truck, it doesn't really seem like there is an answer there. I remember they had a dodge trans in it for like one night til it broke before. They've broken several 4r's and several 5r's. Seems silly to say the 5r is inferior when every other trans has done exactly the same thing.

no 7500lb truck at 1300hp will ever have a trans that lives. ever.
